NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Verizon Communications confirmed
Friday it is selling its 5.4% stake - worth an estimated $280 million - in
England's Cable & Wireless PLC .
Verizon spokesman Peter Thonis said the U.S. communications giant is selling the shares, and such action "is consistent with the strategy we have previously discussed." Recently, Chief Executive Ivan Seidenberg has said the company will likely divest some non-strategic investments overseas, many of which have lost value during the recent economic downturn. Shares of Verizon recently traded up 0.2%, or nine cents, to $38.20. Shares of Cable & Wireless had not yet opened for trading. |
